2706El fotoperiodista veneçolà Ronaldo Schemidt ha rebut aquest dijous a Amsterdam el premi World Press Photo per una imatge que retrata la crema accidental d’un manifestant de l’oposició durant uns disturbis a Caracas, al maig de 2017. La instantània recull el moment en què José Víctor Salazar, de 28 anys, corre en flames en arribar-li un raig de gasolina provinent d’una moto de la Guàrdia Nacional Bolivariana, que va ser capturada i incendiada pels manifestants amb un còctel molotov.
El jove, convertit en una torxa humana amb una màscara de gas a la cara, corre a la recerca d’ajuda per apagar el foc del seu cos, mentre al fons de la imatge s’aprecia, pintat en la paret en color negre, un petit grafit d’una pistola que apunta cap a la paraula “pau”.
El fotoperiodista de l’Agència France-Presse (AFP) treballa habitualment a Mèxic, on resideix, però torna de tant en tant al seu país natal per documentar notícies rellevants i, al maig de 2017, estava cobrint les protestes antigovernamentals a Veneçuela quan va capturar la foto premiada.
El fotoperiodista veneçolà Ronaldo Schemidt, amb el premi World Press Photo que ha rebut dijous a Amsterdam.
Schemidt estava d’esquena quan el manifestant es va convertir en una bola de foc, però es va donar la volta en sentir la calor de la flamarada en la seva esquena, va prendre la càmera i va començar a disparar sense ser encara conscient de la gravetat del que estava passant.
La víctima, que va passar corrent al costat del fotoperiodista, va caure al terra segons després, moment en el qual altres manifestants van aconseguir apagar el foc. Una ambulància va traslladar a la víctima a un centre mèdic i va poder salvar-se la vida, a pesar que va patir cremades de primer i segon grau.
La fotografia de Schemidt s’ha imposat a les altres cinc nominades, que retrataven l’atemptat de Westminster, a Londres; una víctima del grup terrorista Boko Haram, a Nigèria; el drama dels refugiats rohingya, a Myanmar; i dues instantànies de l’alliberament de Mossul d’Estat Islàmic per part de les forces iraquianes.
Ronaldo Schemidt també ha aconseguit el guardó a la millor Fotografia d’actualitat, mentre que un altre veneçolà, Juan Barreto, s’ha endut el tercer premi en la categoria Històries d’actualitat.
D’altra banda, el colombià Juan D. Rodó va quedar segon en la categoria Històries d’esport, pel seu treball ‘La Pau Futbol Club’; i el fotoperiodista espanyol Javier Arcenillas, va quedar tercer en la secció Projectes a llarg termini per la seva obra ‘Latidoamérica’.
